What is digital printing?

Printing is printing, right? Not exactly. Traditional – or analog – printing methods (such as offset printing) require printing plates to transfer an image or text onto a media substrate. Digital printing presses transfer the image directly onto the media substrate. Because of this, digital files such as PDFs or desktop publishing files can be sent directly to a digital printing press to print on a variety of substrates other than paper, including photo paper, canvas, fabric, synthetics, cardstock, and more. Digital printing has a higher cost per page than more traditional offset printing methods, but this price is usually offset by avoiding the cost of all the technical steps required to make printing plates.

Advantages of digital printing

Applications for digital printing are virtually limitless, due to the ability to print on almost any substrate using a wide variety of ink types. Digital printing machines can print on cardstock, heavyweight papers, and even folding cartons, as well as fabrics, plastics, and synthetic surfaces. Digital printing inks include cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) toner and ink, as well as extended color gamut inks such as orange, blue and green and specialty dry inks for metallic, white or clear effects.

Because digital printing eliminates the step of using printing plates, it has inherent advantages over traditional printing. Even short runs of printing can be done cost-effectively and with faster turnaround times. On-demand printing is truly feasible and able to be done in a highly personalized manner.
