How to Add Crops & Bleeds in Canva (Step-by-Step)

Designing something for print in Canva? Before you download your file, you’ll want to make sure crop marks and bleed are turned on, so your final print looks clean and professional.

Here’s exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Set Up Your Design Size

There are two ways to start a design:

  • Click “Create a Design”
    • Choose Custom Size
    • Enter your final size (ex: 3.5 x 2 inches for a business card)
  • Choose from a “Template”
    • Automatic Size or Resize
    • Enter your final size if you resize

Canva will automatically handle bleed later; no need to add extra size manually.

Step 2: Turn On Bleed View

  • Click “File” in the top menu
  • Select “Show Print Bleed”

You’ll now see a border around your design; this is your bleed area.

Make sure any background colors or images extend past this line.

Step 3: Download with Crop Marks & Bleed

  • Click “Share”“Download”
  • Select PDF Print (important!)
  • Check the box:
    • ✅ Crop marks and bleed

Then download your file.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not extending backgrounds → causes white edges
  • Downloading as PNG/JPG instead of PDF Print
  • Forgetting to check “crop marks and bleed.”
  • Keeping text too close to the edge

Keep important text inside the safe zone (away from edges).

Quick Rule of Thumb

  • Background goes to the edge → extend it past the bleed
  • Important info → keep it away from edges
  • Always download as → PDF Print with crops & bleed
